TRANSPORT IN A BIG CITY
Every day all over the world thousands of people leave their towns and villages in the countryside and go to live in the big cities. They want to work there, and they want to visit the interesting places in the cities: the theatres and cinemas, the restaurants and shops, the museums and parks. Some of these people make enough money in the cities to go to the sea for their holidays, or to visit their families in the countryside. But they do not want to travel by train or bus. They want cars, new ones or old ones, big ones or small ones. And they buy cars, thousands and thousands of them, which they bring into the cities.
More than ten years ago our cities were already full of cars, buses and trucks. Now the streets are completely congested and it is very difficult to drive a car along them. Drivers must stop at hundreds of traffic-lights, they have to drive behind a great number of other cars and they must be very careful.
What are our cities going to be like in ten years, or twenty? Are we going to build enormous motorways across them? Or are we going to leave our cars outside the cities and travel by bus or subway in the cities?
With big motorways across them, full of noisy, dirty cars and lorries, our cities are going to be awful places! But people want to travel in the cities, and some of them say: "The public transportation system is in poor condition, the buses are dirty and slow, and the subway is expensive. I want to use my car." This is the problem. How can we solve it?
